Fruit Trees and Home Orchards

Recommended Fruit Trees  - This list of recommended fruit varieties for Geary county and surrounding regions of north central/northeast Kansas is based on Chuck's experience and tests from Kansas State University.  All fruit trees will benefit greatly from annual pruning.  Also refer to K-State's Small and Tree Fruit Cultivars bulletin for additional information.

Recommended Small Fruit - Like the fruit tree list, these are recommended varieties, but certainly not all inclusive or exclusive, of small fruit varieties to consider first.  Also refer to K-State's Small and Tree Fruit Cultivars bulletin for additional information.

Cedar Apple Rust - How to diagnose this annual disease of apple trees and what to do about it.

Harvest Periods of Kansas Fruits - Table showing relative maturation (harvest) of various fruit species/varieties in Kansas.

Growing Blueberries in Kansas - Blueberries are not native to Kansas and they are very demanding to grow.  For the gardener who is willing to put in the effort though, the rewards can be tasty!  This publication is a hodge podge of things that I pulled together from various sources.  My apologies to whomever I have borrowed from!  Note that the two most critical things in growing Kansas blueberries are soil preparation and protection from the hot and dry southwest summer winds!
